Hi friends,
How are ya? Do any of my fellow Northeast residents also miss the sun? It’s hard to be excited about summer when the UV index hasn’t been over three in days. How is one supposed to go to the beach and get a summer glow when clouds fill the sky?
Thankfully, some of my favorite summer activities don’t require sunshine. Is it summer if I’m not splitting my time between my neighborhood AMC and Barclays Center? I couldn’t imagine having a summer without being excited about blockbusters that probably won’t be good but will be fun. I don’t have to worry about the New York Liberty being good or fun since they’re both! I may not get the bronze glow I want this summer, but it’ll still be wonderful!
In today’s newsletter, we’ll talk about what it means to be queer, the resilience of Black mothers, and Materialists.
Let’s get into it!

Materialists has only been in theaters for a few days, and it’s already causing quite a stir online. Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a 30-something-year-old matchmaker in New York trying to find her forever partner. Her options are her broke, ex-boyfriend (Chris Evans) or a millionaire bachelor (Pedro Pascal). It seems like an easy choice, but the heart and the head don’t always see eye to eye. If you’ve already seen the movie, I would love to hear your thoughts! If you haven’t, go to the theaters and get in on all the discourse!
Materialists has led to discourse from people all over the internet. A great palette cleanser from all the hot takes and dissertations swirling around the movie is this video of Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal. The two were friends before filming this movie, and you can absolutely tell they’re besties. The video may start with guidance from the Vogue producers but it quickly goes off the rails!
